I can remember making
handmade cards for friends and
family members at a very young age. As I got older, and I learned
new ways to detail cards, I enjoyed making them even more.
I began taking every opportunity to make a card. Although
handmade cards were becoming rarely seen at special events,
it wasn’t the recognition for the work that I sought;
it was the smile it brought out of the recipient.
A printed card bought
at a grocery store, drug store
or any convenient store is just that: convenient, but NOT personal.
How big was the stack of cards it was picked from? How many
copies of that card do you think were given to how many people
across the nation or even internationally? On any special occasion,
a personal and unique card is a gift in itself,
not just a to/from sticker on a wrapped box.
I try to make each card
different and unique. I can spend
hours on a card depending on the detail. I care about every
detail and never give less than 100% effort on each card. My card
making environment is clean, smoke-free, and pet free. I also
use safe and non-toxic supplies. Every card is made with
construction paper and white glue. I like it simple.
A handmade, personalized
card is not only fun to design
for your friend or family member, but a great conversation piece.
An inside joke, memory, favorite vacation, etc., can be worked
into a card’s design and bring up all the laughs or happy tears all over
again. I couldn’t enjoy my work more. I love the artistic aspect
of the cards, but my favorite thing is the responses from the recipients.
